A heartbreaker is a small firearm used by forces of The Landfall Coalition to stun their enemies. It supposedly provides emotional as well as physical pain (or perhaps the latter with the intensity of the former); Marko comments at one point that being shot by a heartbreaker hurt "like the day my dog died."
Alana steals a heartbreaker from a Coalition soldier in Issue #1 for protection and finds herself using it on several individuals, including Marko, Klara, and she even bluffs being willing to kill Hazel with it when threatened with capture by The Stalk.
It has been noted by Alana that a heartbreaker "doesn't do shit against robots".
